As a long-time user of iFinance, I’ve come to think of it as financial tracking software that is all muscle, no fat (that is, no pointless bells and whistles), and that is particularly true of this latest version. If you’ve been using iFinance 3, the new interface takes a little getting used to, but you will soon find that it is visually rich with some well-thought, useful new capabilities (like the pop-up calendar in the date field and an automatic category assignment feature). Synium provides outstanding customer support and has over the years been responsive to suggestions for improving their software. I also recommend the mobile version of iFinance4. Great flexibility to have your financial data available on iphone or iPad, and the wifi syncing is fast, easy, and secure.
Went to set up my accounts and the UI is totally non-intuitive Couldn’t find my bank nor figure out any way to link to the account, as opposed to the FREE mint app where I did it in about 5 secs! Total waste of money if you ask me!
I was looking for a replacement for my current finance manager and like another reviewer, looking to set up accounts in the form of assets, liabilities, income and expense. I have yet to figure out how to do this with this app. Create a report summarizing expenses by category - I’ve given up. The instruction manual is very complete regarding creating a database, importing and exporting, linking to bank and techical information, but little help in setting up a useful structure and reporting. This is not an intuitive app in my opinion. Fortunately the price to try was not unreasonable. I will continue to play with the reporting structure and report if my opinion changes.
Still a great program. But I’m sticking to iFinance 3 until certain features are fixed, especially auto-completion of transactions (i.e. between accounts, I don’t use the same card/bank to pay for the same things each time). Transfers between accounts have improved but still not as easy as in iFinance 3.
Despite the positive review in MacLife magazine, this app is of little if any use to Americans since it appears you must be attempting to connect to European Banks not U.S Banks. I spent couple of hours trying to download online banking transactions from 3 Banks with zero accomplished. I never once connected to my banks. I tried both manual and the assistant, the instruction are poor, without explanation of FID or Organization(?) fields in the online setup. It appears the creators have little knowledge of U.S Banking (Routing Numbers?). The description in the app store makes no mention of not being compatible with U.S. financial institutions.
iFinance has a lot of potential, unfortunately in the current state it falls short on basic fundamental tasks. e.g. a simple thing like data import from a QFX does not work, an error message appears while the same file can be imported into other applications without any problem.
